WordPress Developer Blog

The Developer Blog needs you!

The Developer Blog needs you!

Have you been longing to write about React, testing, DataViews or linting in an IDE?

Okay, that was a long shot. Maybe you’re at least interested in some of those things?

The Developer Blog editors would love to get you to write one of these specific articles:

  • React best practices and pitfalls
  • Writing and running automated tests for blocks
  • Linting all the things in an IDE: the ultimate doc
  • Extending User profiles natively with DataViews

Come to think of it, the first three of those topics are a little big—huge, in fact. They could each be a series of posts, or of Snippets, the blog’s new short posts that cover tips, tricks, and other quick things.

And if you take one of them on, that’s up to you—and you don’t have to do it alone. You could get a friend or two to write with you—this is a recruiting post, after all. And you’ll have the support of the blog’s friendly editors, who will make you sound like you belong on the pages of the New York Times! Well, the WordPress News page, anyway.

Would you rather write something else?

There’s a whole list of topics in various states of progress that could use some help. And there’s no limit to the things developers and designers need to know about, from performance and APIs to the latest AI integrations.

In fact, the project has a whole new team for AI. Are you on it? Here’s one more place to tell the world what you’re doing!

Even visual topics like layout are in-scope for the Developer Blog. Especially if you tackle them from the perspective of the block editor (patterns and templates, maybe?)

If you’ve written for the blog before, welcome back! If you’re new, welcome aboard. As you’ll find with any group in WordPress, you don’t need any experience to get involved.

It’s simple to get started.

Just do a few little things:

Join the Slack channel. The blog has its own channel on the Make Core Slack.

Come to Editorial meetings. You’ll find it really helpful to come to the blog’s editorial meetings, which are the first Thursday of every month, in the #core-dev-blog channel of Make WordPress Slack at 15:00 UTC.

Read these Tips and guidelines for writers. Here you’ll find everything you need to know to sound great on the Developer Blog. You’ll also find the whole publishing process—every step from proposing a topic and getting it approved, to adding a featured image and giving props to the people who review your code and your copy.

Keep up with the project board. If you already have access to the WordPress GitHub project, you probably also have access to the Developer Blog project board. If you don’t, ask for access on the Slack channel.

And get going! Pick a topic that needs a writer, propose a topic on Slack or at an editorial meeting, and, at the very least, you can call yourself a published author. And you might just find you like writing on the blog enough that you want to do it regularly—some of the editors sure hope that happens, anyway.

See you at the next editorial meeting?

Props to @areziaal, @webcommsat, @greenshady, and @bph for feedback and review of this post!

    Hello!
I would love to be part of this writing series. I’d be happy to contribute articles around testing-related topics especially things like e2e testing, automated testing, test workflows, testing frameworks etc.

Excited to learn, collaborate, and share helpful content with the community. Looking forward to getting started! 🙇‍♀️

It is so weird to start the blog talking about React when WordPress has to be the most popular PHP project in the World.
